About Elizabeth
Bays
Born
in Bloomington, Indiana, I became interested in Japanese as a high school student
looking to take a foreign language. This interest in Japan led me to Earlham College
where I graduated with a degree in Japanese Studies. I have since lived
and worked in Japan on three separate occasions and have visited
on several others. I recently received my Master of Science in
Language Education and am greatly interested in the intersections between art
and language. I have always been doing art of some form or another for most of
my life so studying a Japanese art form, while challenging, was
a natural fit. I currently teach high school Japanese as well as work as an
artist.
About Elizabeth Bays' Paintings
I paint what affects me. I gather impressions of people, places, things,
and events and try to capture them on canvas. My paintings are an attempt to
preserve these impressions; these moments of existence, which I feel are worth
sharing. My joy in painting comes from sharing these impressions or
observations, sometimes quirky, sometimes profound, and sometimes astonishing,
with my audience.
While I
enjoy plein air painting, I also often work from photographs and from memory depending
on the type of observation I am recreating.
